Four Ways to Save (and Make) Money with your Kids’ Stuff – Part Four

Part Four:  Online Consignment with thredUP

I recently got a jump start on a few fall and winter items for my boys by placing my first ever order via online consignment.  Imagine all the best of consignment shopping without all the work.  Don’t get me wrong, there is a huge part of me that loves battling the crowds and competing for those great finds straight from the racks.  However, there is also a huge part of me that loves finding some great deals in my pajamas. So, when I discovered the online consignment store, thredUP, I was eager to see what I could find.  And, I’m even more excited to now be able to provide the following review and offer to readers looking to do the same!

(Update:  ThredUP now has a new look.  Since writing this review, their website has been updated and they have launched a new women’s line.  You can read about my experience here.  So, happy shopping for your kids..and now, for yourself!)

A must for any successful online company, thredUP has a very user-friendly website which allows for a search by gendersizecolor, and/or category.  There is also an option to “shop the look” from stylist-inspired outfits.

Another feature of the website is that all the items are indexed with images.  It is just like shopping from your favorite clothing retail store online, but the prices are much lower.  Here are a few screen shots of a search for boys and girls sweaters.

(Note: The images below show just one of many pages of results.)

For the fellas:

For the ladies:

Once you select an item, you will be taken to a page where you can view the item close-up (with a movable magnifying glass), view similar items (which is great for twin shopping), and add the item to your cart.
After exploring the website and making my purchases (in my pajamas while my boys slept), I eagerly awaited the arrival of my first thredUP box.  In a little less than a week, here is what arrived at my doorstep.

“Gently Loved.  Amazingly Awesome”

The Loot

Arizona Sweaters – One New w/ Tag

Old Navy Holiday Sweaters

Nautica and Gymboree Vests

Coordinating Gymboree Fleece Pull-Overs

University of Michigan Shirt – Brand New w/ Tag

Did you see all those coordinating finds?  And, how about the tags still on a few of those sweaters?

Needless to say, I was very happy with the selection, and the quality was wonderful as well.  With an average price of around $7.00 (for typically much more expensive items such as fleeces, sweaters, and “official” college gear), I can definitely say I will be a return customer.  (This average also includes shipping, as at the time of writing this review, orders over $40 are shipped for free.)

Purchases come with a free “toy” (the box) for the kiddos.
Looking to make a few dollars with your good-condition and too-quickly-outgrown children’s clothes?  thredUP accepts consignors and even sends a stamped bag (aka…large envelope) with each order.  You can also order a bag (with a refundable deposit) without making a purchase.  You can find more information on consigning with thredUP here:  Clean Out.  There is even a short video which explains the entire process.  While I have not sent in any items as of yet, I am definitely looking into trying this as a supplement to my other resale ventures (see below).
Good luck, and happy shopping, saving, and earning with all your children’s stuff!
