I often find that I want to hide in the bathroom in the mornings. I’m not gonna lie, we are still working on finding our morning bliss pre-waffle. Don’t get me wrong, some days are great. And some days are, well, let’s just say, some days are “other.”
But, school is starting soon. (Hooray!) And I’m determined to make this a sunshiny place before the sun is actually shinning for all our sanity. So, I’ve got a plan.
And it involves stickers.
Yes, now that we’ve mastered our “Stop” behaviors with 1-2-3 Magic for Parents, (and there is never any whining or crying or drama), we’re working on adding to our arsenal of “Start” behavior strategies.
Wait, yes, that last part was a bit of sarcasm. We have two 2.5-year-olds in the house. So, of course there is drama. But, we now have a tool for managing it. An “off switch” so-to-speak for the tantrums, which, when we (mom and dad) can keep our cool, really works. (You can see my past review of the book here.)
We’re taking the Magic of stickers, praise, and a fun new chart and putting it all to work.
As you can see here, I am not super creative and flashy. This is just a simple Publisher table with some clip art thrown in for easy identification of the tasks. Two columns for two toddlers, and they will put one sticker in the appropriate box each morning they complete the task on time. I’ll print off a new one each week.
Each morning, we hope the enticement of a sticker will help motivate our little guys to keep a movin’ with the routine so we can get out the door on time. I’ve heard from many other parents that stickers are an effective tool, and I already know my little guys love to get their little hands on them. So, I’m hoping for the best.
And, yes, my husband is all for it as well. He just thinks that we might need one more chart, though. One to keep me on track as I’m out of practice with my morning back-to-school routine as well.
I think I’ll choose to live vicariously through my kids’ stickers instead.
And now for some exciting news. I’ll be hosting a giveaway the entire month of August for a copy of the book 1-2-3 Magic (Parents’ Edition) and 1-2-3 Magic for Kids!
As I mentioned, this book/discipline system was recommended to me over and over by parents who had used it and loved it, and it has been awesome for our family. I’m excited to be able to give a copy away along with the new kids version which I will be reviewing later in the month as well! Here are some other exciting upcoming posts for the month of August:
- 1-2-3 Magic and 1-2-3 Magic for Kids Giveaway – Enter Aug. 1 – Aug. 31 @ Full Hands, Full Hearts
- Back-to-School Link Up and Idea Share – Come link up your best back-to-school posts and find some ideas for your own family.
- Guest Post by Tracy Lewis, co-author of 1-2-3 Magic for Kids – I’m so thrilled to be able to share some advice from one of the 1-2-3 Magic experts, herself! Tracy worked with Dr. Phelan (author of 1-2-3 Magic) in writing the new version for kids, and she’ll be guest posting later in the month.
Happy Back-to-School Season!
