10 Favorite Books for Little Farmers, Truck Drivers, Engineers, and Builders

Boys Books III

I am not an expert on many things.  (Okay, or any things.)  However, since observing my little boys and their farming er, playtime habits as of late,  I am fairly certain when it comes to tractors, trains, trucks, and construction equipment I can hang with the best of them.

Thanks to my 3-year-olds, I can diagram the path of a seed of corn from the planter to the soil and ultimately to the combine (and then to the auger and the Semi and the grain bin).

And, while my boys love to hold, push, pull, dig and zoom their beloved mobiles in their hands, they also love to explore these vehicles via their imagination.  Thus, in no particular order, here are a few of our collective favorite books about all things tractors and trucks and things that “go.”

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site – This beautiful book by Sheri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lictenheld (pictured above) is one of our dear favorites.  It is perfect for bedtime.  Its lullaby-like lyrics will stick with you long after your little ones are of to sleep.

Driving My Tractor  – In this lovely little book, you will find bright illustrations and a repetitive story line.  I recommend finding a version that comes with the accompanying CD featuring “Steve Songs” from PBS Kids fame.  Because a toddler’s version of the “Bumpy Road” song is pretty classic, in my humble opinion.

Otis – This book  by Loren Long (no relation) was sent to me from a dear friend.  She simply could not believe that we didn’t already have this book about a RED tractor named Otis.  (I’m quite fond of a “Red” tractor engineer myself, so this was a must for us.)  I’m so thankful she did.  Otis is the beautiful story about an unlikely friendship between a calf and an old, red tractor.  And, if you love the first (and you likely will), there are additional Otis books, such as An Otis Christmas and Otis and the Puppy.

Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel  – A classic by Virginia Lee Burton, this book is sure to delight your little builders and their imagination year after year.

Dig, Dogs, Dig – This is fun and silly and fast paced book with lots of construction equipment to love.  Also, the kids will have fun finding “Jinx” the cat hiding in and amongst the dogs.

Tractor Mac Harvest Time – Tractor Mac books are a new favorite of ours.  Be sure to also check out the Tractor Mac DVD.  Beware, your children will learn to tell you all the parts of those red tractors.  The DVD also features interviews and illustration demos with the author of the Tractor Mac books.

Johnny Tractor’s New Friend – See also, Corey Combine, because, well combines are the coolest, ever, if you are in the 3-5 age range.  (Or, of you are an adult.  Just ask my husband.)  Danny Dozer and Allie Gator are also great books in the series.

B is for Bulldozer – A great way to incorporate some letter recognition into the reading routine.  After all, “A” is for “Apple,” but also for “Asphalt”.

I am a Truck Driver – A little boy and a little girl drive all the classics –  a snow plow, a street sweeper, a combine, and more – in this easy read.  Enjoy the beautiful pictures, memorable rhymes, and fun onomatopoeia…vroom, vroom!  {The following preview brought to you by one of my favorite little Combine Operators in training.}

Steam Train, Dream Train This book by Sheri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lictenheld (the same author/illustrator as Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site) is another lovely bedtime book.  Read the beautiful story of a circus train as you unwind from your own three ring adventure each day.

A Year on the Farm – Case New Holland is coming out with a new series of books for kids featuring Casey the Farmer.  The first in the series, A Year on the Farm, is out this year!  Our kiddos will be getting their own copy for Christmas so I’ve had a chance to preview it.  Let’s just say I predict this will be a new favorite bedtime book for sure!  Great illustrations, lots of details about the farming world, and an adorable and knowledgeable farmer named Casey to guide you through the story.  There are more books to be released in the series soon, so be sure to put this one on your list!

There you have it.  That’s our list.  What do your little farmers and builders like to read?  We’re always looking to add to our collection or find ideas for the next library trip.  Thanks, friends!
